My guests’ reflections on their stay

I’ve invited my guests to say a few words about their stay in the holiday cottage. As you will see, they are a varied bunch of lovely people; honeymooners, eloping couples and families with both young and teenage children. I hope you agree that this holiday cottage has something for everyone and will provide a highly memorable stay on the magical Isle of Skye.

  • We had a wonderful time - much too short! The weather has been perfect - one sunny day after the other. The bird show in front of the dining table was always better than TV and the scenario made it difficult to leave the house. My daughter enjoyed quite a lot of your DVDs - long nights whilst parents were sleeping. You've changed the old cottage to a very comfortable modern house. I do imagine how much work it was. We stayed mostly around Elgol, doing a lot of walking and welcomed the first signs of spring. We are looking forward to come again and then bring the pictures we have made 20 years before. • Thank you so much for letting us borrow your wonderful home for a week. We had a fantastic stay, watching the wildlife (birds eat a lot of food!), exploring the Spar Cave, lazing on Elgol beach and remembering wonderful holidays from 30 years ago in Heaste. Many thanks. M&S P England April 2022
Remembering wonderful holidays from 30 years ago,
  • We have visited Skye before, but not this part of the island, and I have to say this was by far our favourite. Stone Cottage Skye is just beautiful (a credit to you) and gave us the relaxing break we needed. That said, we packed in lots of walking and cycling - thank goodness for electric bikes! The weather could not have been better- beautiful sunny days and no rain! So after a morning of activity we enjoyed sitting in the garden and soaking up that amazing view. A&D McC Scotland April 2022

  • Positioned towards the end of a winding, scenic road, which just keeps giving, Julian’s property is perfectly nestled, serving as a most wonderful retreat for those who want to unplug from the hustle & bustle. Architecturally designed, sensitively constructed, the property is extremely well appointed, affording those staying a breathtaking resting place to gaze upon the world turning. And Julian is a most gracious host, enormously considerate. Highly recommended for discerning travellers. KW Jan 2021
    Highly recommended for discerning travellers,
  • What a fantastic time we had at the Stone Cottage, a perfect getaway to celebrate turning 30! Visited Glasnakille before for some geological fieldtrips, so nice to return on holiday and spend the here!! The highlight of the week was seeing the Northern Lights from the top of the hill on the way to Elgol, dolphins from the window whilst we ate lunch, summiting Bla Bheinn x2 in a day (had to get the views), cycling the length of Raasay, chatting to the locals, exploring the Spar Cave and the Old Man of Storr. What a week!! On a geological fieldtrip before, we spotted the home in its previous condition, what a change, so lovely to come back after nearly a decade and stay for a week. We loved the home, with amazing views for breakfast and luch and cosy evenings by the fire. We couldn't have had a better stay. J&E D, September 2020

  • In this time of uncertainty, a week's sojourn in Stone Cottage was absolute bliss. The cottage is inspirational: we loved the design, open space, worksmanship and all the wonderful details - a truly memorable holiday. Having visited Skye many many times over the years, we decided to stay local. . .and explore the crofting settlments of Boreraig, Suisnish, Drinan and Glasnakile. We had time to reflect that Skye is so much more than scenery and views, mountains and ubuiqitous 'fairy pools'. Time to reflect on the people who eked a living from this wild coastal strip. • Strange times for us all indeed, but sometimes, just sometimes something comes along which wipes away the cares and worries, which wipes the slate and refills the emotional tank: Stone Cottage is that special something. Built with such sympathy and love of the local environment, we sat in wonder watching the waves, the sun, the heather and the mountains. We made friends with the locals and melted into the commmunity. Yesterday we saw minke whales, porpoise, seals and all manner of wildlife - including the skipper! Thankyou for creating this home Julian, thank you for letting us share it. V&R I October 2020

  • Stone Cottage has been a wonderful home for the past week. The glass window is outstanding - we saw the most beautiful sunset rainbow out over the sea the night before our wedding and it was so special. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in this glorious part of the world in such luxurious settings. We will never ever forget this week in beautiful Skye. Mr and Mrs T, May 2019

  • We were so relaxed and happy in this beautiful place and home. We appreciated the full range of weather apart from snow which we'd also hoped for! There was sun on the water & mountain range to howling storms (my son's personal favourite!). Visited the local caves, did a few 'hardy' walks, watched DVDs, listened to CDs - in short this was the best Christmas we'd had in a while. What a unique place for a holiday home. • 'We came to Skye during a very wet and cold week in October (we even had hail and snow) so thank goodness for Stone Cottage! We were kept snug inside and were able to explore the surrounding area with the children when the sun came out. All our kitchen needs were catered for and the use of all the DVDs, music and games was a godsend. Thanks you for a memorable stay'.   C McN, Lewes. November 2018

  • 'We recently just returned from a week in this gorgeous cottage on the picturesque Isle of Skye. The renovation is very well done and the cottage has all the home comforts you would expect. The open plan dining area with views over the water and the HUGE bath tub were particular highlights! If you are looking for a slice of luxury away from the rush of everyday life this place is perfect. We would highly recommend it and hope to return one day soon!' CH October 2018

  • 'Gorgeous cottage in a very quiet location off the beaten track but within short distance of the Spar Cave, fabulous boat trips from Elgol and good walking. We enjoyed some days driving too - up to Dunvegan Castle and coral beach as well as The Three Chimneys . We loved coming back along the track past the sheep and cows each evening to the cottage and then sat looking through the picture window at the lovely view - complete peace and quiet. Highly recommend'. LH June 2019

  • This traditional stone cottage modernly built, combines marvelously old and new. In the house is everything you need. It owns a very large, comfortable kitchen, a stove and large bright rooms. A house with artistic, individual touch with a fantastic location overlooking the Atlantic. Great compliment for the construction and furnishing of this house. Also a huge selection of films, music and books with many interesting subjects and an excellent music taste ;) Thanks for this lovely stay!!! PR + 2 friends Germany, July 2017

  • Even though the weather was particularly vile we still had a fabulous week. We’ve been to both Skye and Torridon (in some brilliant 5 * cottages) many times over the years, but we both felt that Stone Cottage was rather special. Took a few days to get used to it as it’s not like a normal holiday let. For one it’s your cottage and once you get used to that it’s pretty cool! Being an old Vinyl fan I really loved the turntable (I used to have a Linn LP12 + Naim amps) The underfloor heating took time to wrap our heads round. . . . but we really started to get the idea towards the end of the week, when we came in the cottage never felt cold. So total respect for the re-build, a stunning property in one of the best parts of the world We will hopefully be back, probably looking at 2019 as are up at Allt Dearg near Sligachen next May and then over Chamonix later next year. Once again thanks for a fabulous week. R&JP June 2017

  • We had a superb break thanks, the location was perfect for us, a real get away from it all - never had to herd Highland Cattle before, but got quite good at it on the road to Elgol, No otters sighted sadly although we did see Sea Eagles on a few occasions, which is always a welcome and awe inspiring sight..Golden eagles too were seen from the dining table window. The walks were excellent, and the little cove at the end of the road near the cottage was so peaceful.... The cottage was really well equipped thanks... and we all thoroughly enjoyed the week - seems so long ago already. R&JS May 2017

  • We had a fantastic stay in the cottage and absolutely loved the cottage and Skye. Thanks so much for the champagne and card, it was very much appreciated and really kind. The weather was awful for the morning of our wedding, however we still had a very memorable day and managed to get the boat to Loch Coruisk and got married on the boat in torrential rain which we actually loved. I must add we did have pretty amazing weather the rest of our time and explored the island. We hope to be back one day soon and cannot recommend the cottage enough to our friends and family. Also just to add, we actually met in Thailand, so it was a coincidence that all of your photos were of Asia :-) Thanks again and best wishesH&D T-T March 2017 C & DF June 2017

  • Dear Julian, We arrived at 3 o' clock today. We are impressed which perfect job you and your friends did by restoration of this stone house. Great job, respect! We did restoration jobs in the past and know how much work this was. We love the style and the seaside view. We also had a look over the music and video collection. It contains many stuff we like too. Thanks a lot for this great place to have a nice time. Best regards B,K,A D, Germany, April 2017

  • Hi Julian We’ve arrived home from our stay in Scotland and as promised I wanted to email you to say thank you. Our wedding week in your cottage was perfect from start to finish - what you’ve achieved with Stone Cottage is absolutely beautiful. We chose to stay at your cottage because we also have a love for re-using and recycling materials. It's so homely and characterful. We didn’t want to leave! It’s now my mission to win the lottery so I can at least attempt to buy it from you! 😉. One of the major things that made the week for us was the music collection. Our relationship began with a shared love for Radiohead and our love for new music grew from there. Teleman has become our wedding-week album! We also loved Jon Hopkins, Moby, Artic Monkeys (we’re from Sheffield after all) King Creosote and more. Your film collection is equally eclectic and D picked up the book 1984 at every opportunity - I bought him his own today so he can finish reading it. When it came to our wedding day, we couldn’t have picked a better place to begin it. We woke up to a incredible sunrise through our bedroom window (we slept downstairs) and had breakfast at the table - it was so sunny I was wearing my sunglasses indoors at 8.30am. We saw our boat heading round to Elgol as we were eating which was really surreal! Dan got ready in the dining area in front of the big window (Dan and the photographer moved a mirror in there) and I set myself up in the room upstairs next to the big chest of drawers. We had our first look at each other in the garden close to the trees just in front of the house. We made it out to Coruisk and our wedding was unbelievable - the mountains were snow-capped from the storms the day before - we got married about a 20 minute hike into Coruisk! When we got back we headed down the path through where the abandoned barn is and had some pictures taken down on a tiny and very rocky section of Glasnikille beach that was still dry (it was nearly high tide), before getting ready and eating at Coruisk House. The sun shone all day for us - we were really lucky. It's been the most amazing week of our lives - and Stone Cottage was an integral part of that. It absolutely made our wedding week! We have lots of pictures of the cottage and us getting ready there so as soon as we get them back I’ll share them with you. And thank you so much for the champagne - we popped it on our final evening down on Elgol beach at sunset. Our only feedback would be to put a ball-catch on the barn door to the downstairs bedroom as it rattles in the wind (we had a few windy nights). And please don’t do too much to the garden - we love the section around the trees. It's so rugged! We’ll be back - hopefully with family and maybe some little ones in the future. And if that winning lottery ticket comes through, you'll most certainly hear from me. I'll share some images with you when we get them. H&D T-T March 2017

  • Firstly a big thank you - was a really lovely gesture, and it topped off our arrival as Simone was amazed when she saw the cottage. There was amazement when we pulled up at stone cottage, and both of us couldn't believe just how nice it was. It was just brilliant seeing Simone gobsmacked as we looked around inside. You've done such a great job and so nice to stay in a place with a  design aesthetic to it with everything so well considered. Stone Cottage is a superb mix of well informed design, original history and a stunning location. It was spacious and modern but felt completely cosy, especially with the wood fire going. The huge glass window creates a vista too good to leave yet its still private and secluded. The high quality binoculars were a great touch too. Just the perfect place to switch off from it all - even the road from Broadford to get you there is up with the most scenic on Skye. Anyway thanks again - it really did make the honeymoon, I've raved about the cottage to a number of people. T&SC June 2016

  • I would just like to say how much we enjoyed staying at your cottage on Skye.  It is in a fantastic location and beautifully renovated.  My 15 year old son absolutely loved your collection of space books and it kept him occupied so that he didn't miss wi fi and mobile signals that can be disruptive on a holiday. The aim of the holiday was to  have a complete rest after what has been quite a stressful 6 months and we certainly achieved that. We hope we can return in the near future. R McC April 2016

  • Hallo! The house is just fantastic. The Stylish decor, the beautiful ambience and the perfect interplay of old and new. The Isle of Skye offers the perfect natural backdrop. However, you should be aware that you leave the cottage reluctantly. Greetings from Bonn from T, M and M
